La Palma registers an increase in unemployment in February of 1.9%, with 6,567 people without work

The Obecan report reveals that unemployment has grown by 120 people compared to January, but has fallen by 16.2% compared to the same month in 2023

The public employment offices of La Palma, located in Santa Cruz de La Palma and Los Llanos de Aridane, have registered an increase of 1.9% in the number of unemployed people in February of this year, according to the report published this Monday , March 4, by the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan) of the regional government. This data means that unemployment has affected 120 more people than in January, reaching a total of 6,567.

However, the year-on-year evolution shows a positive trend, since unemployment has decreased by 16.2% compared to the same period in 2023. Specifically, in February of last year, according to the same source, there were 7,834 people unemployed in La Palma and, in February 2024, the aforementioned 6,567, which implies that, in those 12 months, the unemployment lists on the Island have been reduced by 1,267 job seekers.

Unemployment affects women and people over 45 years of age more in La Palma

At the end of February, there were 3,777 women without a paid job on the Island, which represents an increase of 1.4% compared to January, and 2,790 men, which represents an increase of 2.5%. The interannual variation, in this case, indicates a decrease of 14.7% in women and 18.1% in men.

Women, last February, constituted 57.51% of the total number of unemployed people on La Palma and men, 42.49%. 60.90% of all unemployed people registered in February of the current year in the island’s employment offices were 45 years old or older; 33.21% between 25 and 44 years old and 5.89% less than 25 years old.

The Canary Islands reduce unemployment in February by 0.05%, with 169,730 people without work

Registered unemployment fell in the Canary Islands by 88 people, 0.05% last February, according to data released this Monday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy, reports Efe. With 169,730 unemployed, in year-on-year terms the Canary Islands decreased by 19,436 people in the second month of the year, that is, by 10.27%, this group.

By province and in monthly terms, this indicator decreased by 281 people (0.32%) in Las Palmas and increased by 193 (0.24%) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which placed the unemployed at 88,002 and 81,728. registered in each one. Compared to February 2023, the number of unemployed has decreased by 9,954 people, 10.16%, in Las Palmas, and by another 9,482, 10.40%, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
