Review of Public Security Competencies
The Minister of Interior, Núria Parlon, has recently shared that the transfer of responsibilities to the Mossos d’Esquadra in ports and airports could be delayed more than expected. Although initially this process was expected to culminate in September, Parlon indicated that it is likely to extend beyond that date. In an interview with La Vanguardia, he stressed that this change is linked to a current bill, which seeks to offer greater legal certainty and avoid future challenges.
Video surveillance initiatives in municipalities
The Minister also announced the creation of a subsidy program aimed at helping smaller municipalities and those without local police. This support will facilitate the installation of video surveillance systems and registration control, as well as the maintenance of existing infrastructure. Although the details about the budget have not yet been defined, Parlon clarified that it will be carried out in two phases: one for small municipalities and another for those without local security forces.
Review of substance traffic legislation
In another area, Parlon was in favor of hardening sanctions for marijuana traffic, seeking to align Spanish legislation with that of other European countries. This measure, according to its perspective, is essential to stop the growing criminal activity related to this business in Catalonia, which has become an attractive point for criminals due to relatively low sentences.
Strategies to combat multirreincidez
In addition, the Minister evaluated the actions implemented to combat criminal multirreincididency, which include specific action plans and the activation of new courts. Parlon emphasized that from the police field, the results of these initiatives should begin to be noticed, noting that the message that you want to convey is that crime in Catalonia will not be tolerated or easy to carry out.
Kanpai plan and seasonal challenges
Finally, the Minister mentioned that during the summer season the ‘Kanpai’ operations will be intensified, although he acknowledged that the increase in tourism can bring a rebound in crimes such as thefts and violent robberies. However, it is confident that after summer it can be evaluated whether these measures have had a positive impact on reducing such crimes.
