Changes to Alcohol Limits for Drivers

Recently, significant changes to alcohol limits for drivers in Spain have been announced. These changes will affect both new drivers and professional drivers. According to recent reports, the maximum level of alcohol allowed in the blood will go from 0.30 grams per liter to 0.20 grams, and from 0.15 milligrams per liter per liter per breath inhaled to 0.10.

Reform of the Traffic Regulations

These adjustments are part of a broader reform of the Traffic Regulations, on which the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has been working for more than three years. This new regulation is in the final phase of its process, since the public hearing and information stage has begun to receive contributions before its approval in the Council of Ministers.

Other News in Traffic Regulations

Motorists and Retentions

In addition to changes to alcohol limits, other changes to traffic regulations are being considered. For example, the possibility of allowing motorists to drive on the shoulders in traffic jams is being studied.

Cyclists and Scooters

In relation to cyclists and scooters, the mandatory use of helmets for cyclists at all times is proposed, as well as the inclusion of luminous or reflective elements in the cycles to improve their visibility in low light conditions. Likewise, it is proposed that only those over 16 years of age can use scooters, and in the case of work use, the use of a reflective vest will be required.

Additional Traffic and Road Safety Rules

Right Lane and Emergency Vehicles

The possible future regulation also contemplates the obligation for vehicles to circulate in the right lane to leave the left lane free for emergency vehicles or snow plows in case of snowfall. In addition, the rule is established to move aside to leave an emergency lane free when traveling at a pedestrian pace or stopping.

Mandatory Course for Mopeds

In the field of driving regulation, the imposition of a mandatory course for users of motorcycles and mopeds up to 125 cc has been announced, in response to the high accident rate of these drivers.

Regulation of Automated Driving and Point Recovery Courses

In addition, a study will be carried out to establish standards in automated driving, and the content of driver point recovery courses will be updated.
