Puigdemont Defends His Right to Try to Form a Government

The Junts+ candidate for the presidency of the Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont, has reaffirmed his intention to run for office and has responded to the statements of the mayor of Santa Coloma and spokesperson for the Catalan socialists, Núria Parlon, who urged Puigdemont to consider the ‘reality principle’ as there is no alternative majority to that represented by Salvador Illa. Puigdemont has emphasized that everyone has the right to try to form a government if they believe they can obtain the necessary parliamentary support.

Examples of Previous Situations

Puigdemont recalled the case of Artur Mas, who won the elections in 2006 but could not govern despite obtaining more deputies than the PSC at that time. He also mentioned the case of Jaume Collboni in the Barcelona City Council, who lost the elections but managed to become mayor thanks to a pact with the PP. In addition, he made reference to the president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, who lost the last elections but continues in the minority ruling position. These examples seek to support his legitimacy in trying to form a government.

Puigdemont and his Vision as President

Puigdemont has expressed confidence in his chances of being president, stating that otherwise he would not run for office. Furthermore, he has made it clear that his objective is to form a coalition government with ERC, with the possibility of gathering between 55 and 59 seats depending on the participation of the CUP. He has also begun talks with Republicans to explore the possibility of an agreement. In Parliament, he will seek to know the support of each candidate for the investiture, including Salvador Isla’s announcement to run, and evaluate whether the PSC candidate has the support of the PP.

Final thoughts

Puigdemont’s reaction seeks to reinforce his position as a candidate for the presidency of the Generalitat, highlighting his right to try to form a government and his vision of a possible mandate. These statements occur in a complex political context, where negotiations and alliances are essential for the formation of a new government in Catalonia.
