A challenge for Campdevànol Hospital
Recruiting staff is one of the challenges that Hospital de Campdevànol has to face. The center is no stranger to the lack of health professionals throughout the country. The managing director, Joan Grané, explains that they currently need to fill eight nursing positions, between retirements and layoffs. “You look for one and there isn’t one,” he details, while admitting that it is even more difficult for a mountain hospital to attract talent. The lack of doctors, on the other hand, has been “compensated” thanks to the strategic alliance with the Consorci Hospitalari de Vic, with whom they work in a coordinated manner.
Services that you want to incorporate
Endocrinology and neurology are services that want to be incorporated in the Ripollès center in the short term. The 2022-2026 Strategic Plan was presented this Friday.
Vacancies not filled
Out of a staff of thirty nurses, the regional hospital of Ripollès has eight vacancies that they have not yet managed to fill. Grané places the problem in “a market issue”: given the lack of professionals everywhere, reference hospitals tend to win and not the smaller ones.
Economic incentives
In relation to the financial incentives for primary care that the Department of Health announced for rural areas, the head of the center assures that he is not aware of it, apart from what has been said to the media. He believes that there has been a “lack of planning” because the sector has been warning for years about the lack of doctors and nurses in a few years.
Strategic Plan
Precisely, the Strategic Plan that they presented this Friday dedicates a space to the recruitment of talent, aware that this is a challenge that will have to be solved in the coming years. In relation to the previous strategic plan, Grané highlights a fact that for him is fundamental and that “makes them more attractive”: the opening of the UVic-UCC Faculty of Medicine in 2017 and the link with the research center . Thanks to the strategic alliance they have had since last June with the Consorci Hospitalari de Vic, it has allowed them to offer professionals who have the possibility of training and research, “very important for them and also for patients because with a well-trained doctor and well trained the care the patient receives is better.”
Alliance with Vic
Since last June, Ripollès patients who have to undergo a general or urgent surgery must travel to Vic instead of going to Olot, as had happened in recent years. The Department of Health announced that what had been a historic alliance between the two counties was being restored, leaving without effect the decision to redirect patients from Ripoll to Olot or El Trueta, as had been done for a few years.
Increased activity
Grané also pointed out that another goal is to increase the percentage of activity they offer. “The final objective is for the people of the region to have close proximity care and for 85% of health care activities to be carried out in Campdevànol.” They are currently scrubbing 80%. “We are working for this, doing activities that were not done before”, he remarks.
Technological improvements
The strategic plan does not foresee improvements in the hospital’s facilities, but there is an item to renew technology, the figure of which is not closed.
