The critical sector of ERC seeks to lead a change in the party
The critical sector of ERC, known as ‘Col·lectiu Primer d’Octubre’, has agreed to present its own candidacy for the party’s next National Congress. This candidacy, called ‘renewal’, aims to lead a change of course in the party, replacing Oriol Junqueras and Marta Rovira. Their purpose is to promote a stronger independence movement and less prone to pacts with the parties that supported article 155. In addition, they seek to establish a strategic common front with other sovereignist formations.
The leadership renewal process at ERC
The poor electoral result of ERC in the last elections to the Parliament of Catalonia has accelerated the process of leadership renewal in the party. The secretary general, Marta Rovira, has already announced that she will not stand to renew her position, while Oriol Junqueras will leave the presidency after the European elections. However, Junqueras intends to present himself as a candidate in the next National Congress, with the aim of renewing the confidence of the militancy and continuing to lead the party.
The proposal of the ‘First of October Collective’
The ‘Col·lectiu Primer d’Octubre’ has materialized its discontent with the current leadership of ERC in an alternative leadership proposal. This proposal is based on once again establishing independence as a central objective, establishing a common strategic position with other pro-independence forces, breaking relations with the parties that supported article 155 and recovering the assembly culture. In addition, it seeks to encourage internal debate and plurality of opinions within the party.
The objective of regaining the trust of the electorate
The promoters of the renewal candidacy in ERC believe that a change in the management team will contribute to regaining the trust of the electorate. They consider that the strategy followed so far has been erroneous and has led to pacts that have weakened the party’s position. For this reason, they appeal to the militancy that feels identified with their proposal to join forces and achieve a more solid and coherent independence movement.
The future of ERC
The next ERC National Congress, which will be held on November 30, will mark a turning point in the party. With the renewal candidacy of the ‘Col·lectiu Primer d’Octubre’, an intense debate is expected about the direction the party should take and the strategy to follow in the current political context. The final objective is to recover ERC’s role as a leading party for independence and regain the trust of the electorate.
