The new reality of Catalonia
Catalonia has undergone significant demographic change, with a third of its population currently of foreign origin. This phenomenon, often ignored or manipulated, leads us to deeply reflect on the direction of our society. How have we built, as a community, our identity in recent years?
A past of reception
Historically, Catalonia has been an attractive destination for people around the world, thanks to labor opportunities and a welcome story that has lasted for decades. Immigration waves have provided not only essential labor, but also a cultural and economic revitalization that has enriched neighborhoods and cities.
Inclusion policies and their impact
In the past, initiatives have been implemented to facilitate integration through the teaching of the language and the simplification of administrative procedures. However, these actions were overshadowed by the lack of planning in fundamental areas such as employment and housing.
A change of narrative
Today, with increasing pressure on public services and a decline of independence, it has begun to perceive that people may be ‘left over’. This perception, which advances with discretion but persistently, forces us to reconsider our stance on diversity and inclusion.
The danger of dependency
The distribution of grants without a proper labor integration plan has generated harmful dependency and has jeopardized social cohesion. Thousands of people are trapped between bureaucracy and precariousness, without labor horizon.
Reviewing priorities
Education is a fundamental pillar, but we cannot limit integration into language learning. Linguistic normalization must be accompanied by a stable and promising environment. If there is no security in housing or future perspectives, learning becomes ineffective.
The importance of planning
Catalonia urgently needs a comprehensive approach that covers family policy, housing and water management. Without a solid infrastructure, we cannot expect sustainable growth or a shared identity.
Looking to the future
The voices that criticize immigration often forget that, in the future, we also grow old. Society needs a labor force that holds services and helps take care of the older generations. The construction of the future cannot be based on rejection, but on responsibility and truth.
A new model for Catalonia
Catalonia has to choose what kind of country it wants to be. We cannot continue to be trapped between old ideals and welfare without course. What is needed is a model in which coexistence, work and planning are the foundation of an inclusive and committed society.
It is time to open constructive debates and stop living the story to start building a reality where everyone, regardless of their origin, has a space and a commitment to the community.
