Socialism as a defense against the extreme right
Pedro Sánchez, President of the Government and leader of the PSOE, has expressed since the meeting of the Socialist International in Bucharest that socialism represents the last line of defense against the extreme right. In his speech, transmitted through social networks, he emphasized that the antidote to counteract the advance of these radical parties is to govern by addressing the real needs of the population. Sánchez highlighted that a government that deals with the specific problems of the people is the best antidote against reactionary populism, since this counteracts the frustration and anger that fuels the extreme right.
The role of social democracy in Europe
The Spanish leader urged the social democratic forces of Europe to act with determination and loyalty to their principles to confront those who polarize and divide societies through misinformation and lies. Furthermore, he highlighted that social democracy has demonstrated its success in managing recent crises, such as the pandemic and the energy crisis resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The importance of concrete action
Sánchez stressed that it is not enough to be right, but that it is crucial to translate moral victories into real victories, such as winning elections and carrying out concrete actions, such as raising the minimum wage and strengthening the welfare state. Likewise, he emphasized that this is the way to prevent the extreme right from coming to power.
Challenges in the face of the reactionary wave
The President of the Spanish Government recognized that ultra-conservative forces are advancing in Europe, imposing their schemes on the conventional right-wing parties, which, according to Sánchez, are incapable of resisting their impulse. In this sense, he pointed out that socialism cannot count on the traditional right to confront the extreme right, assuming the responsibility of being the last line of defense against this reactionary wave.
Support for leftist forces in France
Sánchez also expressed his support for left-wing forces in France, ensuring that they will defeat the far right in the legislative elections. He conveyed a message of support to the Socialist Party and the New Popular Front, highlighting that the best way to stop the reactionary wave is to govern. He referred to the success of socialism in Spain and expressed his conviction that the French socialists will also achieve victory in the elections.
