The IMPaCT Cohort Macroproject
The Cohort IMPaCT macro project was launched this week in the basic area of Baix Francolí, specifically in nine municipalities of Camp de Tarragona. This macro study aims to study the causes of diseases that affect the population in order to prevent and treat them.
Over a period of twenty years, a comprehensive study will be carried out that will analyze the causes and the evolution of the health of the participants. This research, promoted by the Carlos III Health Institute of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and Universities, will follow 24,000 people in Catalonia and 200,000 throughout the State.
The importance of research
The Cohort IMPaCT study is a pioneer at national level and places Catalonia on the same level as other European countries in relation to research into the causes of diseases. This initiative will allow us to obtain results applicable to our population and improve knowledge in this area.
Random selection and representativeness
The 4,000 people participating in this study are not volunteers, but have been selected randomly to ensure their representativeness. Special emphasis will be placed on the study of common diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer and mental illness.
Understanding the causes and conditions of health
The main purpose of this study is to understand the causes of diseases and health conditions. The functional deterioration associated with age and the impact of socio-economic inequalities on the health status of the population will be investigated in particular. This macro-project will contribute to progress in improving the quality of life and the well-being of society.
