The Ametlla de Mar Council is removing banners and flags
The Ametlla de Mar City Council has removed this Thursday morning a banner for the ‘Freedom of political prisoners’ and a star flag from the facade of the council building, as well as another star flag from the tourism office and a yellow ribbon that is welded to the feet of a sculpture at the roundabout at the entrance to the municipality. This action has been carried out by imposition of the Zone Electoral Board (JEZ) of Tortosa (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
Respond to a complaint
The withdrawal of the banners and flags responds to a complaint filed by the civil organization ‘Impulso Ciudadano’, which defends constitutional rights.
Reaction of the mayoress
The mayor of Ametlla de Mar, Eva del Amo, has explained that the City Council abides by the JEZ agreement, although they were surprised that this time the request arrived much sooner than in previous electoral processes. Del Amo has affirmed that the municipal government will attend to the request and will remove the pro-independence banners and flag, as well as the yellow ribbon for political prisoners. According to the mayoress, this action has been carried out in other electoral processes, but never so far in advance.
Replacement after the elections
Eva del Amo has stated that once the electoral period ends, the City Council will put up the banners in defense of the political prisoners again, since they consider that until the amnesty law is effective, these banners are important. The council has 24 hours to comply with the requirement of the JEZ.
