Recognition of the health management of the Community of Madrid
The Community of Madrid, led by president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has been awarded the ‘special health management award’ of the XIII edition of the ‘ATuSalud’ awards, given by the right-wing newspaper La Razón. On receiving this distinction, Ayuso has expressed that he is doing it on behalf of all Madrid residents and has defended the collaboration between public and private healthcare, affirming that this model ‘works’ in Madrid and should not be modified, ensuring that Madrid has the best healthcare in Spain and ‘one of the best in the world’.
Reactions and criticism
Ayuso’s statements have generated various reactions and criticisms on social networks, with allegations of the management of the covid pandemic in the residences and the death of 7,291 residents who were not referred to hospital centers. These criticisms have been accompanied by acid comments and jokes, calling into question the recognition received.
Recognition of the quality of the healthcare system
President Ayuso has emphasized that this recognition is in honor of all Madrid residents, professionals and companies in the sector, stating that together they make up ‘the best health system in Spain for its quality, universality and humanity’.
Research on the management of the pandemic in the residences
A citizens’ commission concluded that during the covid pandemic there was an excess of mortality in Madrid’s residences, estimating that 4,000 lives could have been saved if ‘discriminatory’ management criteria had not been applied. This commission was set up at the behest of relatives and those affected, in the face of the ‘lack of interest and will’ of the political and judicial authorities to find out and report on what happened to the elderly confined to the Madrid residences.
Management defense
The management of the Community of Madrid during the pandemic, especially in relation to the residences, has been the subject of defense by President Ayuso, who has assured that, given the complicated health situation and the fragile state of the patients, referrals in hospitals would not have changed the outcome of the cases.
