The constitution of parliamentary groups
Everything indicates that the CUP and Aliança Catalana (AC) will share the mixed group in the Parliament of Catalonia in this 15th legislature. Unlike the rest of the parliamentary groups, none of them have given a seat to the Cupaires so that they can have their own group. The constitution of the parliamentary groups will be ratified by the Parliament Board next week. However, anti-capitalists are trying to find a formula to avoid having to share speaking time with the members of Sílvia Orriols, with whom they have ideological differences on social and economic issues. This can be complicated because the regulations of the Parliament of Catalonia do not allow the transfer of seats as flexibly as in the Congress of Deputies.
CUP negotiations
The CUP has tried to negotiate with ERC, Junts and the Commons to give them a deputy so they can have their own group. However, so far they have not been successful in these negotiations. Despite this, if there are no last-minute surprises, the CUP and AC will share the mixed group. Although the cupaires will be able to form a subgroup since they have more than 3 seats. Being in the mixed group, both groups will have to share intervention time and will receive fewer financial resources than if they had their own group.
The situation of the CUP and Aliança Catalana
The CUP has experienced a decrease in its parliamentary representation, going from 9 to 4 seats in the last Catalan elections. For its part, Aliança Catalana has entered the Parliament of Catalonia for the first time with two deputies. To form your own group you need 5 seats, so if any other party gives a seat to the CUP, they could achieve it. However, the Parliament’s regulations establish that if this happens, the transferred deputy must remain in the new parliamentary group throughout the legislature or remain as non-attached.
Reactions of political leaders
The leader of Aliança Catalana and mayor of Ripoll, Sílvia Orriols, has reacted to the news with an ironic message on social networks. For her part, the spokesperson for the CUP, Laure Vega, has responded to Orriols, criticizing the decision to share a mixed group with a formation that she considers extreme right.
