The Government of the Generalitat and the drought situation
The Government of the Generalitat has taken the decision not to advance to phase 2 of the drought emergency in the Ter-Llobregat system, thanks to the recent rains. Despite this, the spokeswoman for the Executive, Patrícia Plaja, has stressed the importance of not underestimating the seriousness of the current situation in Catalonia, despite the rainfall of the last few days.
Assessment of rainfall and the measures taken
According to Plaja, the recent rains are positive and have allowed the Government to manage water effectively, avoiding the need to apply new restrictive measures in the coming weeks, including the summer. This means that, for the time being, it will not be necessary to bring water in boats.
Monitoring the water crisis and future perspectives
The Interdepartmental Drought Commission has examined the situation of the water crisis in Catalonia, emphasizing the Easter rains, which have had a positive impact on forests and crops. As for the reservoirs of the internal basins, they have maintained an increasing trend since March 8-9, which, although slight, will avoid the need to take further restrictive measures in the coming months, including the summer .
Possibility to raise the emergency and the municipal swimming pools
Regarding the possibility of lifting the emergency in the municipalities that depend on the Ter and Llobregat rivers, the general secretary of Climate Action, Josep Vidal, has pointed out that this decision will be conditioned by future rains, the generation of more resources and the reduction of water consumption due to current restrictions. In addition, the Government is considering the possibility of municipal swimming pools becoming climate shelters during the summer, in response to a request from the Catalan Federation of Municipalities.
