A new leadership proposal at ERC
The ‘Collective Primer d’Octubre’, a critical sector of ERC, has decided to present its own candidacy with the aim of leading the formation and promoting a renewal in the party. This candidacy, called ‘renewal’, seeks to replace Oriol Junqueras and Marta Rovira, and to promote a change towards a stronger independence and less inclined to agree with other parties. In addition, he proposes to establish a common front with other sovereignist forces.
The context of the National Congress
This decision comes as part of the next ERC National Congress, which will be held in an extraordinary way on November 30. This congress has been called after the electoral defeat of the Republicans in the recent elections to the Parliament of Catalonia, where they went from 33 to 20 seats. This result could imply the loss of the presidency of the Generalitat and has already led to the resignation of the president and candidate Pere Aragonès.
Leadership renewal at ERC
This initiative of the ‘First of October Collective’ reflects a discomfort with the line followed by the ERC management, especially for its agreement with Madrid and the socialists. In addition, he asks to put the independence of Catalonia at the center of the party’s agenda. This has resulted in an alternative leadership proposal that seeks to redefine the party’s policies, putting the goal of independence as a central axis and establishing a common strategic position with other pro-independence forces.
Reaction and proposal of the militants
The militants of the ‘First of October Collective’ have expressed their conviction that this renewal of leadership will contribute to regaining the confidence of the electorate. In addition, they have called on the militancy to identify with this proposal, which defends a firmer independence and exclusive negotiation with other pro-independence forces. In this sense, they seek to gather support for their leadership alternative, with the aim of once again positioning ERC as a point of reference for independence.
