The Madrid executive has unleashed a strong controversy by awarding a distinction to Javier Milei, which has generated a confrontation with the central government.
The decoration and criticism from the central government
The decoration awarded by the Madrid president to the Argentine president has been the subject of intense criticism from the state executive. The relationship between Argentina and the Spanish state has been tense since Milei attacked Pedro Sánchez and Begoña Gómez in May.
The Government’s spokesperson minister has censured the action of the Madrid president, describing the medal as ‘false’ and reproaching her for having broken loyalty and institutionality. Likewise, the first vice president of the executive has joined the criticism, stating that the decoration is a provocative political act by the PP.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs has stressed the private nature of Milei’s visit to Madrid, separating it from any official agenda. For his part, the Minister of the Interior has described the decoration as a ‘lack of political maturity’ and ‘infantilism’.
The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities has indicated that this situation is a clear confirmation that in the country, the extreme right is represented by the PP.
