The scandal and its impact on the ERC leadership
The recent scandal related to the defamatory posters of Ernest and Pasqual Maragall about Alzheimer’s has generated a profound impact on the leadership of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC). According to audio obtained by RAC1, senior members of the party were aware of the authorship of the posters from an early stage and sought to cover up the situation. The conversation, dated February 8 of this year, involves key figures such as Oriol Duran, Sergi Sabrià, Tolo Moya and Jordi Roig, who discussed strategies to manage the crisis once the information from the police report was made public.
Maragall’s complaint and ERC’s strategy
Ernest Maragall, ERC mayoral candidate at the time the posters appeared, announced his intention to file a complaint with the Mossos d’Esquadra. The audios reveal that those involved discussed the possibility of visiting Maragall to apologize and present a scapegoat, pointing to a young man from Anoia as responsible for the smear campaign. The strategy, according to the audios, was to disassociate the party’s communication leadership from the authorship of the posters, attributing it to the young people of Anoia.
Consequences and measures taken by ERC
Following the revelation of these facts, ERC has taken disciplinary measures. Two of the four members of the party considered involved in the case of the defamatory posters have been temporarily suspended from membership, and the permanent expulsion of one of them is being considered. The president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, was also mentioned in the audios, which indicates prior knowledge of the case by senior party officials.
