Transformation of the Executive Council

Salvador Illa, the new president of the Generalitat, has set up a renewed Executive Council that has 16 councillors, including 9 women and 7 men. This restructuring reflects the current needs of Catalan society and marks a clear distinction with the previous government of Pere Aragonès.

New Departments and Functions

Among the main novelties, the creation of two new ministries stands out: that of Linguistic Policy, led by minister Francesc Xavier Vila, and the Ministry of Sports, under the leadership of Berni Álvarez. With these additions, the new government seeks to address aspects that were previously integrated within other departments.

Changes in Communication

Another aspect to highlight is the government’s new communication, where the minister for Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, Sílvia Paneque, assumes the role of spokesperson, replacing the journalist Patrícia Plaja, who was not part of the Executive Council.

Reformulacions Nomenclaturals

The Island has chosen to change the names of several departments, maintaining the same powers in many cases. For example, the Department of the Interior, which is now called the ‘Department of the Interior and Public Safety’, reflects a change in leadership with Núria Parlon at the helm.

Ministries with Modified Name and Function

The Ministry of Economy has also experienced a name change, going from ‘Economy and Finance’ to ‘Economy and Finance’, with Alicia Romero at the helm. In addition, the Education department is expanding, now including Vocational Training.

Reassignment of Competencies

In addition to the name changes, there is also a reassignment of powers, as is the case with the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, which now includes responsibilities for Ecological Transition, previously assigned to another department.

News in Justice

The Ministry of Justice, which is renamed the ‘Department of Justice and Democratic Quality’, gains powers in Religious Affairs, reflecting a broader focus on diversity and inclusion.

Stability and Criticism

Certain ministries, such as Health and Culture, remain without significant changes. However, the absence of the Ministry of Digital Policies has generated criticism from the opposition, highlighting the need to recover this department to face the current digital challenges.

A Look to the Future

With these changes, the Island Government seeks not only to adapt to the new social realities, but also to send a clear message about its political priorities. Time will tell if these reforms will translate into tangible improvements for citizens.
