Strategic collaboration in times of crisis

In the face of the recent fall in processism preferences, both ERC and the commons are at a crucial moment that promotes them to reconsider their collaboration. Both formations, who have experienced moments of strong rivalry, are now looking for synergies to face the crisis of trust that affects their bases.

A progressive front: dream or reality?

The idea of joining forces on a broad front that includes both ERC and the commons, and potentially the CUP, was proposed by Joan Tardà. This initiative has generated a positive reception among the most open sectors of the commons, represented by Jaume Asens, who sees in this union an opportunity to strengthen the left.

Brussels’s vision

With an approach in Europe, Asens and Diana Riba lead an initiative that seeks to weave alliances between independence republicanism and eco -socialism. Recently, they have asked the European Commission to investigate police infiltrations in social movements, a cause that is supported by the CUP, despite their absence in the European Parliament.

Challenges of a potential alliance

Despite the need to unite forces to deal with the far right, internal differences and particular interests make it difficult to concretize this alliance. The commons, for example, have postponed the debate about their relationship with Sumar and Podemos, reflecting on their identity after internal fractures.

Maintain identity while sought to union

The fears of losing their own identity have led to resistance to both ERC and commons. Junqueras’ recent proposal to run with other brands has been rejected, revealing the fear of ERC to dilute in a new formation. This causes collaboration conversations to stay at a more informal and less committed level.

An uncertain Birds Driver

With a political landscape that continues to evolve, the possibility of a united front between ERC and the commons seems so necessary and complicated. The two formations must find a way to balance their interests and ideologies in order to build a viable alternative in the face of the adversities facing the left in Catalonia.
