An agreement to increase remuneration
The update of the salaries of public workers has been an issue of conflict since the beginning of the Catalan legislature and the disappearance of the General State Budgets of 2024. Recently, an agreement has been reached between the Spanish government and two of the majority unions in the civil service, CCOO and the UGT, to increase wages by 2.5%. This agreement, however, has had difficulties in being implemented due to the lack of debate on the annual accounts and the validation of the anti-crisis decree (https://correccioencatala.cat/com-estructura-text-catala/).
A measure that comes late
According to workers’ representatives, while the agreement is an improvement, it comes too late and does not restore the purchasing power lost to public employees. The unions have highlighted that the 2.5% increase is below the increase in inflation, and therefore, is not sufficient to solve the real problems of the general administration of the State (https:// correccioencatala.cat/com-estructura-text-catala/). The CSIF union has called for a mobilization for next June 27 to demand better working conditions and an improvement in the public work offer.
Different union positions
While CCOO and the UGT celebrate the agreement and consider it beneficial for public sector workers, the CSIF trade union criticizes the agreement as insufficient and does not address the central demands of workers. The CSIF highlights the need to renew the aging templates of the public administration and calls for a better replacement of public employees (https://correccioencatala.cat/com-estructura-text-catala/). In addition, the union is asking for the elimination of the replacement fee, which it considers one of the biggest problems in the sector (https://correccioencatala.cat/com-estructura-text-catala/).
conclusion
In short, updating the salaries of public workers has been an issue of conflict during this legislature. Despite the agreement between the Spanish government and the unions CCOO and the UGT, there are different positions on the sufficiency of the 2.5% increase and the workers’ demands. The CSIF union has called a mobilization to demand better working conditions and an improvement in the public work offer.
