A complex decision
The Podem Catalunya party has announced that it is withdrawing from standing in the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia that will take place on May 12. This decision has been taken at a time of uncertainty and political instability in Catalonia, and with the aim of not collaborating in the fragmentation of the left, as this only benefits the right and the extreme right. The party has considered that in this context they cannot deploy the capacity and political and organizational influence necessary to face these elections.
A primary process
Initially, Podem Catalunya had started a primary process to choose its candidate for the parliamentary elections. However, the party has decided that it is not viable to participate in these elections, since they have not had enough time to strengthen and structure themselves as a political formation. In addition, in a context of a double electoral date, the party has considered it more appropriate to focus on the European elections, where they have already chosen Irene Montero as a candidate.
Breaking with the commons
In the last parliamentary elections, Podemos presented itself together with the communes under the name En Comú Podemos. However, this alliance seems impossible to repeat after the quarrels that have taken place in recent months, especially after the break between Sumar and Podemos at the state level. In addition, the two formations presented themselves separately in the Galician elections, without obtaining representation. This has made it difficult to negotiate for a new electoral alliance in the upcoming elections to the Parliament of Catalonia.
Consult the militancy
Podem Catalunya has taken this decision together with the party’s state leadership. However, they have also decided to ask their membership if they support this decision. The goal is to continue building a stronger Podemos, with a great presence on the streets and to be a point of reference in Catalonia to be useful to all the people who need us.
