Xavier Trias and the possibility of an agreement between Together for Catalonia and the PSC
Xavier Trias, former mayor of Barcelona and leader of the TriasxBCN candidacy, does not rule out a future pact between Junts per Catalunya and the PSC after the Catalan elections on May 12. In an interview with Europa Press, Trias has stated that he does not rule out this possibility, although he has pointed out that the problem is deciding what to do in this pact. According to Trias, a possible agreement with the socialists must take into account that Junts is pro-independence and the need to find mechanisms to reduce dependence on Catalonia. The former mayor emphasized that independence is an aspiration, but that the main goal is not to be dependent. This means working so that Catalans are less dependent every day and looking for ways to guarantee their autonomy.
The leadership of Carles Puigdemont
Trias has claimed the importance of having strong leadership that can align different positions within a formation and act with unity. In this sense, he emphasized that Carles Puigdemont personifies this leadership capacity and expressed his support for him to be the president of the party. According to Trias, it is necessary for there to be a person who has a clear path to follow and who can lead the party with authority, without that meaning being authoritarian. For Trias, Puigdemont is the right person for this task.
The presence of Trias in the City Council
Regarding his presence in the City Council, Trias has stated that he has no intention of leaving in the middle of the elections. However, he pointed out that the process to decide who will be the future candidate of the municipal group is already underway. Trias emphasized the importance of choosing someone with a vocation to stay and assured that the municipal group is already well organized. With regard to a possible government pact in the council, Trias has stated that this will depend on the result of the Catalan elections, although he believes that the PSC and ERC already have an agreement to govern.
