The Foment del Treball Nacional has hosted the presentation of the Unió d’Esports de Catalunya, the great Catalan sports project born from the agreement between the Unió de Federaciones Esportives de Catalunya (UFEC) and the Unió de Consells Esportius de Catalunya (UCEC), which has brought together more than 150 personalities.
The Unió d’Esports de Catalunya aims to be the reference in the Catalan sports sector to promote and enhance the development of sports policies, protecting the sector and ensuring the right to physical and sporting activity of citizens. It brings together 43 sports councils, 71 federations, 1,100,000 athletes, more than 1,000 qualified technicians and 12,000 sports clubs and organizations.
A united and committed sector
The event was attended by Gerard Esteva, president of the Union of Sports Federations of Catalonia; Jaume Domingo i Planas, president of the Union of Sports Councils of Catalonia, and Anna Caula, Secretary General of Sports of the Generalitat.
Gerard Esteva, president of the Union of Sports Federations of Catalonia and president of the Unió d’Esports de Catalunya, has expressed that “we have a united, committed, hardworking and enthusiastic sector. We encourage you to continue making Catalonia a sports benchmark and we thank you all for making the creation of this union possible”. For his part, Jaume Domingo, president of the Unió de Consells Esportius de Catalunya (UCEC) and vice-president of the Unió d’Esports de Catalunya, has affirmed that “this union was born with the will to respond to a higher interest, progress and the update of sport in Catalonia. From the diversity of sports federations and councils we will work tirelessly so that the Unió d’Esports de Catalunya makes a better future possible for Catalan sport and for our country”.
A debate on the Catalan sports system
The presentation included two round tables where they reflected on the current Catalan sports system and proposed strategies for its improvement. The first round table, “Proximity, a value of the Unió d’Esports de Catalunya”, had as speakers Maribel Zamora, president of the Catalan Volleyball Federation; Patrícia Illa, neighborhood councilor, civics, professional training, sports at Igualada City Council; Jordi Merino, president of the Federation of Excursionist Entities of Catalonia; Jaume Mora, president of the Barcelona School Sports Council.
The second, called “The UEC, an instrument of the country”, consisted of a dialogue between the former general secretaries of sport of the Generalitat de Catalunya Anna Pruna, Manel Ibern and Gerard Figueras. They addressed the role that the UEC should play in Catalonia today and how it should become a key element for the construction of a new sports governance model.
