The events of the 20th anniversary of the 11-M attacks

The events of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks are not the center of every cover, but they have a prominent presence on almost all of them. This tragedy, which caused 193 deaths and 2,057 injuries, is still an open wound in Spanish public life. The attacks of 11-M were perpetrated twenty years ago and there are still people who have not recognized the truth about their authorship. At the time, attempts were made to attribute the attack to ETA in order to influence the elections that would be held three days later. This conspiracy has left a tail of straw that still persists today in some media, such as El Mundo.

The truth about the 11-M attacks

The attacks of 11-M were perpetrated by jihadist groups and not by ETA, as they tried to make us believe at the time. This manipulation of the truth was carried out by a government of a western state, which tried to deceive the whole world. However, they failed to achieve their goal and lost the election against all odds. Even today, some media continue to feed this lie, such as El Mundo, which has tried to link the events of the 20th anniversary with the 11-M war, even though there is no war related to that date.

The division caused by the lie

What is really divisive is not 9/11 itself, but the lie that was tried to spread at the time. In this sense, it is the Popular Party (PP) that bears the full weight of this lie, since it has never acknowledged its responsibility in the manipulation of the facts. The newspaper La Vanguardia tries to present the division as a confrontation between the PSOE and the PP, but the truth is that the division is based on lies and the PP’s lack of recognition of the truth.

The current political context

The newspaper El Mundo tries to take advantage of the current political context to give a twist to the narrative and relate the events of the 20th anniversary to the elections. In this sense, the case of Portugal stands out, where the Portuguese Socialist Party has allowed the center-right to govern after losing the elections. The newspaper tries to compare this situation with that of the PSOE in Spain, which has sought to add the votes of different political forces to form a government. However, this comparison is unfair, as the political situations of Spain and Portugal are different and cannot be equated.

The importance of truth

In short, the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is an occasion to remember the victims and reflect on the importance of truth in public life. There is still much work to be done to clarify the facts and ensure that this tragedy never happens again. It is everyone’s responsibility to demand the truth and not allow lies and manipulation of information to take place in our society.
