A mobilization in defense of the agricultural sector

This Thursday, February 22, in the morning, about sixty farmers, from the Solsonès Farming Platform collective, gathered in front of the office of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Food (DARP) in Solsona . The aim of this rally was to deliver a manifesto with a series of demands in defense of the peasantry.

A platform committed to farming

The Plataforma Pagesa del Solsonès is a collective made up of farmers who work in the Solsonès region. This platform aims to defend the interests of the agricultural sector and improve the living conditions of farmers.

Claims in defense of the peasantry

During the rally, the farmers publicly read a manifesto with 14 points of demand. This manifesto covers the concerns and demands of the agricultural sector and aims to improve the working and living conditions of Solsonès farmers.

Some of the claims

Some of the claims included in the manifesto are the following:

1. More flexibility in the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to adapt to the needs of farmers.

2. Administrative simplification to avoid the bureaucracy that affects the agricultural sector.

3. Decent prices for agricultural products and ending unfair competition.

4. Require the same health and sustainability requirements for imported products.

5. Measures to alleviate the effects of the drought and prioritize the use of water in the agricultural sector.

6. Recovery of a department of its own in the Generalitat that understands and helps the agricultural sector.

7. Require the payment of aid on time and the tax exemption of subsidies.

8. Better tax conditions for farmers.

9. Real solutions for wildlife problems affecting the agricultural sector.

10. Review of the Animal Welfare Act to ensure the welfare of farm animals.

11. Promote generational succession in agriculture and facilitate access to land and housing in rural areas.

12. Guarantee that agrarian laws and policies are consistent and have continuity over time.

13. Avoid the creation of agencies that generate more bureaucracy and duplication of tasks.

14. Review and adapt the pasture coefficients for extensive cattle breeding.

Meeting with DARP representatives

After reading the manifesto, five representatives of the Plataforma Pagesa handed the document to the Head of the regional office of the DARP, Elisabet Brualla. In addition, they held a meeting with the Director of Territorial Services in Central Catalonia, Manel Armengol, to comment on and assess the various requests.

This concentration is another example of the struggle of farmers to defend their rights and improve working conditions in the agricultural sector. The Plataforma Pagesa del Solsonès will continue to work to achieve its goals and make the voice of farmers heard.
