A constant struggle
It seems that many years have passed since the first feminist mobilizations that we remember with a sense of victory. Or the strikes of recent years, when women took to the streets with growing anger at the media coverage of cases of gender-based violence. Too recently we have the change of cycle of the last few years and the drop in mobilization caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. And now what? You need to stop and think again.
A demobilized society
It is true that the demobilization of society has been gaining ground, with unfinished struggles and a population tired of demanding without seeing results. Without prospects, a large part of the population has fallen into despair.
The importance of the feminist movement
But despite this, the feminist movement remains essential to achieving real change. Without the feminist movement, there would be no public policies to protect women from sexual harassment or gender-based violence. However, it is important to remember that the institutionalization of feminism is not enough. It is necessary to maintain an autonomous feminist movement that can question the established structures of exploitation and oppression.
The current challenges
In this context, the extreme right plays a key role in delegitimizing feminism. With a victimistic discourse, they try to trivialize the feminist movement and present it as an enemy. The right is threatened by the transformative potential of feminism, which calls into question the inequalities of gender, class and race, and which questions the logic of the neoliberal economic system.
The strength of the feminist movement
Despite the challenges, the feminist movement has managed to consolidate and become present in all areas of society. From schools to workplaces, from leisure to culture, feminism has managed to endow our society with content and sensibility. The feminist movement is a critical political tool capable of building a global alternative.
A call for participation
Therefore, we invite all women to actively participate in the feminist movement. The feminist struggle is the only one that will guarantee the full emancipation of women. As the song says: “We’re the same as when we started.”
Feminist left
From the Feminist Left, we continue to work to achieve a fairer and more equal society. Feminism is our tool to change the world.
