Caritas Espanyola responds to the Humanitarian Emergency in Ukraine
During the year 2024, Cáritas Espanyola aims to mobilize a sum of four million euros to respond to the humanitarian emergency that has occurred after two years of war in Ukraine. These funds will be added to the 6.4 million euros that have already been sent to the two Ukrainian Caritas and the Caritas network in neighboring countries to meet the needs of the population
Support for Emergency Projects
Cáritas Española plans to continue supporting the emergency projects it was already supporting before the large-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. These programs are related to support for vulnerable families, people with functional diversity, institutional strengthening and the fight against human trafficking
The Needs of the Population
It is estimated that around 40% of the population in Ukraine depends on humanitarian aid to survive, with the east of the country being the most affected area. Last year, the Caritas network in Ukraine served more than 1.3 million people, providing help in areas such as food, water, sanitation, shelter, psychosocial support, education and humanitarian aid
Intervention strategies
For 2024, Cáritas Espanyola has established different intervention strategies depending on the geographical location. In the east of the country, where emergency humanitarian aid is most needed, this type of aid will be prioritized. On the other hand, in the central and western areas, the priority will be social integration, access to the labor market, health, education and decent housing
Obstacles in Humanitarian Work
Aid workers face several obstacles in their work in Ukraine. Among these obstacles are indiscriminate attacks on civilians and basic infrastructure. In addition, the stressful situation the country is experiencing and the constant interruptions in activity affect the mental health of humanitarian workers
Help the Refugees
The armed conflict in Ukraine has led to massive migration, both internally and to neighboring countries. More than 210,000 people have received help from Caritas in the border countries. By 2024, Caritas a la Frontera plans to strengthen support in access to basic social services, medium-term accommodation and integration into the labor market
Support for Ukrainians in Spain
In Spain, the diocesan Caritas network has accompanied 4,098 Ukrainians, incorporating them into the usual care services for people and with a contribution of 651,839 euros to cover food, clothing, footwear and housing expenses
