The Popular Party continues to govern in Galicia
Despite the elections recently held in Galicia, the Popular Party has managed to maintain its dominance in the region. Since Galicia’s autonomy was established 42 years ago, the PP has governed for 36 of those years, and with the results of this election night, its mandate will be extended to 40 of the 46 years of autonomy. This historical domain has not undergone significant changes on this occasion, despite a higher electoral participation than in the last regional elections. Although the Popular Party obtained 47.36% of the votes, representing 53.3% of the seats in Parliament, it did not achieve an absolute majority in votes. However, its majority in seats will allow it to govern without the need to make agreements with other political parties.
Electoral participation and emigrant vote
Although electoral participation increased compared to the last regional elections, it was not enough to put the dominance of the Popular Party at risk. According to the official results published on the Xunta website, the current participation is 67%, but this percentage is not definitive and cannot be compared with previous elections. Total turnout is expected to drop below 57% once the emigrant vote is counted, which will take place in the coming days. Although only about 30,000 people out of half a million eligible to vote have cast their vote so far, the total turnout is expected to be around 65%. Despite the increase in participation, it was not enough to challenge the Popular Party’s dominance in Galicia.
The challenge of putting the PP’s dominance at risk
Putting the dominance of the Popular Party in Galicia at risk would have required an even greater participation than that recorded in these elections. Although participation increased by nine points compared to the last regional elections, it was not enough to challenge the dominance of the PP. To achieve this, a participation of around 65% would have been needed. However, despite this challenge, the Popular Party has managed to maintain its dominance in the region.
