Drago Canarias denounces pressure on workers at the Oliva Beach hotel

In statements made this Tuesday, Drago Canarias assured that several employees of the Riu Oliva Beach hotel, located in Corralejo, north of Fuerteventura, have been subject to pressure after the Ministry of Ecological Transition ordered the demolition of the establishment.

The political party issued a statement warning about the situation, after receiving testimonies from hotel workers who claim to have been pressured to support a document against the file of expiration of the concession to the complex and the subsequent demolition order issued by the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

Lack of support for the written allegations

According to the spokesperson for Drago Canarias in Fuerteventura, Aceysele Chacón, less than half of the staff, made up of approximately 400 employees, has signed the statement of allegations presented by a group of workers at the complex. This indicates that the majority of Oliva Beach employees understand that the hotel must assume responsibility if it has breached the concession.

Report of inappropriate practices by the hotel

Chacón denounced that the company has maintained the operation of the hotels within the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, despite having had more than twenty years to correct its errors. Furthermore, the company has used workers to defend its interests and continue making profits at the expense of the environment.

Criticism of the Canarian administrations

The spokesperson criticized the Canary Islands administrations for prioritizing the interests of the multinational company, which has apparently failed to comply with the conditions of the concession, instead of ensuring the rights of workers who could lose their jobs. She pointed out the lack of guarantees of a fair transition for employees and the absence of real solutions from the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the City Council of La Oliva.

Arguments for the demolition of the Oliva Beach hotel

Chacón recalled that the ruling ordering the demolition of the hotel is based on serious irregularities, such as the construction and sale of apartments on public land, works not contemplated in the concession, perimeter fencing that restricts access to public space, and deficiencies in operation of the purifiers.

Recognition of environmental associations

The spokesperson for Drago Canarias in Fuerteventura praised the work of environmental associations such as Agonane and Turcón, belonging to the Ben Magec-Ecologistas en Acción Federation, for their work in the search for justice and protection of the natural environment.
