The imminent agreement for the amnesty law
Time is running out for the negotiation of the amnesty law, the new draft of which is expected to be approved by the Congressional Justice Committee on Thursday. A new text with which Jaume Asens “believes” that those prosecuted for the Democratic Tsunami case such as Carles Puigdemont and Ruben Wagensberg “will be even more shielded” than before. This is what the leader of the commons and negotiator of Sumar defended this Sunday in a media attention in Sant Felip Neri square in Barcelona gathered by the ACN. Asens has insisted that the understanding between the PSOE and Junts is “imminent”, a statement that on Saturday already earned him a touch of attention from Jordi Turull, warning that only JxCat speaks on behalf of the formation.
The need for a quick amnesty law
Asens has argued that it is necessary to have an amnesty law “as quickly as possible” because, “the later it arrives, the later the people who have to go to prison can benefit from it”. He gave the example of Dani Gallardo from Madrid, who has received an order to go to prison because of the sentence of the Supreme Court to four years in prison for having protested against the sentence of the trial in Madrid.
The effect of the amnesty on those prosecuted by Tsunami
Sumar’s negotiator, however, did not want to reveal the content of the “possible agreement” that is being negotiated, but Asens said that “the people who are currently on trial for Tsunami will benefit from the amnesty law.” And he insisted on this line: “He will protect his cases. He already protected them, but now I think they will be protected even more.”
Confidence in the approval of the amnesty law
Jaume Asens has assured that he “does not envisage” a scenario of lack of agreement on the amnesty law. “I have the firm belief that it will be approved, based on my knowledge of the negotiations.” In this regard, he pointed out that they have until Thursday to announce the agreement and reiterated his “conviction” that it will not wait until that day.
Candidacy in the European elections
This afternoon, Asens presented the endorsements collected for its candidacy in the European elections. At this point, he wanted to address the “progressive Catalan forces” to stand up and defend not only Catalan in Europe, but also “the rights and freedoms threatened by the rise of the extreme right”.
“We are at a moment of bifurcation, of a historical crossroads”, assured Asens, who added that they are facing “the Europe of financial despotism that carries in its bosom a seed of hatred that can germinate in xenophobia, exclusionary nationalism and punitive populism”.
