A chaotic situation
The situation in Haiti is chaotic. There are no words to describe it. We are living a hell. This is how the Salesian missionaries who work in the country explain it after an unprecedented wave of violence.
Violence and elections
Since the Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, announced a commitment to hold elections no later than August 2025, violence between the gangs has erupted. The gangs loot police stations and everything in their path: businesses, shops… they want to take the national palace, the government.
The situation of the Salesians
The Salesian missionaries arrived in the country in 1936 and currently work in different regions, especially in Port-au-Prince in neighborhoods such as La Saline and Cité Soleil, where the highly vulnerable population lives. The Salesian communities are fine, but they have not been able to develop any activity since this situation began.
Everyday life
At the moment there is already a shortage, especially in the capital, Port-au-Prince, of drinking water, food and basic products. You can’t get out either by land or by air. We live as if it were a kind of prison.
An uncertain future
The future of Haiti looks very complex. According to the Salesian missionaries, we live in fear every day because we don’t know what can happen a minute later. This is our life these days.
A call to the international community
Salesian Missions is calling on the international community to end the violence and support a population in a very vulnerable situation.
