The PP and the withdrawal of Guillem Agulló’s number
The Popular Party (PP) has expressed its position regarding the removal of the name of the young anti-fascist Guillem Agulló from a walk in the Jardins del Real – Vivers in the city of Valencia. According to the popular spokesperson in the city council, Juan Carlos Caballero, the PP will not support this measure, since it is in favor of coexistence and against frentism.
The Councilor for Parks and Gardens, Juan Manuel Badenas (Vox), announced that he was going to remove the name of Guillem Agulló from the Vivers promenade, arguing that it was an imposition of a political option that is no longer the majority. However, the PP spokesperson has made it clear that this proposal is from another municipal group and that each party will cast its vote in the Culture Commission. After studying it, the PP has decided not to accept it due to its position in favor of coexistence.
The elimination of the Guillem Agulló Award
Recently, in Les Corts Valencianes, Vox and the PP eliminated the award that bore the name of Guillem Agulló. This award, which has been awarded since 2016, recognized outstanding people and institutions in the fight against xenophobia, racism and hate crimes. The opposition has criticized this measure, stating that it represents a setback in democratic memory and that it would be incomprehensible in any country in Europe (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_(grammatical)).
Reactions and solidarity
Various reactions have arisen as a result of these decisions. The Parliament of Catalonia has condemned the fascist attacks in Castelló de la Plana during the Magdalena Festival. The approved declaration expresses solidarity with the anti-fascist social center of Castelló, called ‘La Cosa Nostra’, and criticizes the actions of the city council and the Local Police, who protected the aggressor group and facilitated their escape (https://www.spanish.cl /Grammar/Notes/Articulos_Definidos_Indefinis.htm).
Furthermore, Joan Baldoví, deputy in Congress, has shown his support for the parents of Guillem Agulló, highlighting their dignity compared to the indignity of the councilor of the Valencia city council.
These events have generated a debate about democratic memory and coexistence in today’s society. While some defend the withdrawal of Guillem Agulló’s name, others consider it to be a step backwards in the fight against fascism and hate crimes (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_(grammatical)).
