The City Council Approves a New Waste Fee

In a recent plenary session, the Selva del Camp City Council approved a new tax ordinance aimed at regulating the rate of garbage collection and disposal. This decision, which has generated an intense debate among the attendees, is taken in the context of the entry into force of new legislation on waste and polluting soils scheduled for 2025. This law, which seeks to adapt to the directives European countries, promotes environmental responsibility with the slogan ‘who pollutes, pays’.

Increase in the cost of the collection service

The cost of the collection service has experienced a significant increase, going from 300,000 euros in 2015 to an estimate of 725,000 euros for the next year. This price increase will translate into a new rate of 240 euros per year for each family unit, an amount comparable to that charged in neighboring municipalities.

Payment and Bonus Scheme

Citizens will have to pay this fee through two semi-annual installments: the first will be fixed, while the second will depend on the level of selective collection achieved. If Selva del Camp achieves 55% efficiency in selective collection by 2025, the second quota could be free. This represents an opportunity for residents to reduce costs, encouraging a collective effort for sustainability.

Other Fiscal and Administrative Changes

In addition to the new waste fee, the plenary has approved other fiscal ordinances that affect various municipal taxes and fees. Due to the increase in the CPI, most of these rates have been adjusted by 2.4%. This includes the IBI, the tax on Economic Activities and the public prices of services such as the music school.

Delegations and Recognitions

Another highlight of the meeting was the delegation to the BASE office of the Diputació de Tarragona for the collection of the new waste fee. In addition, the City Council has approved a 2% increase in municipal staff salaries, as well as the recognition of the Ca l’Hipòlit workshop as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest, a space that will soon be transformed into a center of interpretation of the earthenware.

The Future of Waste Management in the Jungle

With these changes, Selva del Camp is positioned on a path towards more sustainable waste management, promoting citizen participation and environmental responsibility. The next challenge will be to get all residents to be actively involved in selective collection, an aspect that will not only benefit municipal finances, but will also contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone.
