The challenge of fighting rural depopulation

Depopulation is a priority issue on the political agenda, and there are various initiatives that seek to attract new inhabitants to small municipalities and that have been successful. The Minister for the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, has highlighted in Congress that the policies implemented since 2018 have generated a significant change in this aspect.

According to Ribera, nearly 300,000 people have chosen to settle in towns, and three out of four small towns have managed to attract population. However, a question arises: how long do these new people stay in the villages?

The example of Cabra de Mora as a success story

The minister has also mentioned that provinces such as Cuenca, Soria and Teruel have experienced an increase in their population. In particular, the municipality of Cabra de Mora, located in the Gúdar-Javalambre region, has managed to reverse its negative demographic trend.

In Cabra de Mora, the Cabra de Mora Neighborhood Association, Pueblo Vivo, is carrying out outstanding work. Its focus is on creating initiatives that contribute to the maintenance of current residents, attract new residents and improve living conditions in the town.

Bernardo Abad, president of the Cabra de Mora Association, Pueblo Vivo, highlights that there is no magic formula to attract people, but rather it is a constant effort carried out jointly by the Association, the City Council and the residents of the area.
