The increase in Catalan industry in 2023
Catalan industry experienced growth of 2.8% last year, despite international economic conditions and the slowdown in economic growth in the Eurozone. This increase has been driven by the good performance of exports and the moderation of energy prices, according to the Department of Enterprise and Work.
Higher growth than other regions
The Gross Value Added (GVA) of Catalan industry has grown above that of the State and the Eurozone, which have recorded a 2.8% decline. This represents a remarkable success for the Catalan industry in a challenging economic context.
Diversification of growth
The Industrial Production Index by sector highlights the good performance of transport equipment, pharmaceutical production, extractive industries, machinery and mechanical equipment, and electrical equipment. These sectors have experienced significant increases, contributing to the diversification of the growth of Catalan industry.
Relationship with exports
The good performance of the industrial sector is closely linked to that of exports, which have experienced an increase of 8.5% until November. This positive trend contrasts with other reference economies that have registered setbacks in their exports.
Impact on employment and unemployment
Industrial employment has grown by 2.7% above pre-pandemic levels, with a total of 496,800 members of the sector in Catalonia. At the same time, industrial unemployment has decreased by a cumulative 5.3% year-on-year, standing at a level 12.1% lower than the pre-pandemic situation.
