A history marked by destiny

El Cuervo’s cinematic legacy is undeniable, but its new adaptation reminds us that, despite its legacy, not all that glitters is gold. The tragicomedy surrounding the death of Brandon Lee, son of the legendary Bruce Lee, has left a mark that has undoubtedly influenced the perception of this film. His untimely death in a filming accident has given rise to speculation that has fueled conspiracy theories and urban legends over the years.

Review of a classic

The new version of El Cuervo arrives in cinemas with the aim of capturing the attention of the public, although it faces a big challenge: to overcome the emotional impact of the original version of 1994. This new adaptation, directed by Rupert Sanders, it tries to keep the essence of James O’Barr’s comic, but falls short in its attempt to recreate the depth that made the original film a cult classic.

An incoherent script

The script for this new installment seems to be filled with questionable creative decisions, with a villain who literally sells out to dark forces and a plot that often defies logic. Moments of drama are interspersed with scenes that seem taken from a cologne commercial, leaving the viewer perplexed by the lack of narrative coherence.

An aesthetic that cannot save the plot

Despite the visual impact and style that characterized the original version, the new installment fails to capture the same magic. Aerial shots and slow-motion scenes seem more like an attempt to make spectacular moments than a well-thought-out artistic approach. The lack of proper pacing and forced lines of dialogue make the film a spectacle of involuntary laughs instead of a deep drama.

A reflection on what could have been

Cuervo 2024 gives us an opportunity to reflect on the expectations we have of modern adaptations. Perhaps the original was so powerful that any attempt to revisit it was doomed to failure. The film, with its exaggerated solemnity, reminds us that it is not always necessary to revive legends, and that sometimes, it is better to let the classics live on in their greatness.
