Castilianisms in the Catalan language

by PREMIUM.CAT

Introduction

Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to the opinions of Mònica Montserrat, a linguist and university professor, about Castilianisms in the Catalan language. His words surprised me and made me reflect on this very controversial topic.

Castilianisms in context

Montserrat argues that in certain circumstances, the use of Castilianisms is not as serious as previously stated. According to her, when a Castilianism is used consciously and it becomes clear that it is not a Catalan word, this circumstance does not cause any irreparable damage to the language. In addition, the use of Castilianisms can bring an added meaning, grace or proximity to the message that you want to convey.

The importance of linguistic correction

It is important to emphasize that, although Catalan has its rules and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans ensures their fixation and evolution, it is necessary to speak and write the language with the utmost correctness and to respect its words, expressions and constructions own syntax. This is a valid practice for any language.

The value of Spanish

However, Montserrat defends that in certain cases, the use of Castilianisms can bring added value to the message. Through examples of TV3 programs, the linguist demonstrates how the use of Spanish idioms has contributed to the success and impact of the programs during the 40 years of the chain’s existence. These examples highlight how the use of Castilianisms can give a touch of humor, authenticity or proximity to the expressions used.

The context and social acceptance

It is important to bear in mind that, in most cases, the use of Spanish idioms is done consciously and both the sender and the receiver of the message are fully aware of it. This use occurs in a colloquial and informal context, where the acceptance of these expressions is more flexible. It is in this sense that Montserrat argues that there is no danger or harm in this practice.

conclusion

In summary, although it is important to speak and write Catalan correctly and respect its rules, the use of Castilianisms in certain circumstances can add value and enrich the message. It’s a matter of context and social acceptance. It must be remembered that Catalan is a living language and constantly evolving, and this evolution includes the use of words and expressions that come from other languages.
