Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to the opinions of Mònica Montserrat, a linguist and university professor, about Castilianisms in the Catalan language. His words surprised me and made me reflect on this very controversial topic.
Castilianisms in context
Montserrat argues that in certain circumstances, the use of Castilianisms is not as serious as previously stated. According to her, when a Castilianism is used consciously and it becomes clear that it is not a Catalan word, this circumstance does not cause any irreparable damage to the language. In addition, the use of Castilianisms can bring an added meaning, grace or proximity to the message that you want to convey.
The importance of linguistic correction
It is important to emphasize that, although Catalan has its rules and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans ensures their fixation and evolution, it is necessary to speak and write the language with the utmost correctness and to respect its words, expressions and constructions own syntax. This is a valid practice for any language.

However, Montserrat defends that in certain cases, the use of Castilianisms can bring added value to the message. Through examples of TV3 programs, the linguist demonstrates how the use of Spanish idioms has contributed to the success and impact of the programs during the 40 years of the chain’s existence.
