The decision not to stand in the elections
The management of Podem Catalunya has taken the decision not to stand in the elections of May 12, after a consultation with the militancy. This decision represents a change with respect to the previous announcement in which it had been indicated that they would run in the elections, either with the commons or without them. Despite having considered the possibility of presenting themselves with other left-wing formations, they have finally ruled out this option. This implies that there will be no revalidation of the pact with Jéssica Albiach’s, and neither will they compete as has recently happened in Galicia, they will move to the Basque Country and soon to Europe.
Reasons for the decision
The formation has regretted the lack of confidence of the commons to run together in a coalition, and has argued that this decision has been taken at a time of uncertainty and political instability in Catalonia. Podemos has expressed its responsibility towards Catalan citizens, stating that they will not collaborate in the fragmentation of the left, as they consider that this only benefits the extreme right. In addition, they have admitted that they have not had enough time to strengthen themselves internally in the face of the Catalan and European elections, and that focusing on both at the same time is not viable.
Expectations regarding the decision
In statements to Europa Press, the formation has expressed its hope that its decision not to present itself will facilitate the creation of a progressive government. In addition, they have asked the grassroots if they support the decision of the management of Podem Catalonia and Podemos to continue building a stronger Podemos, with 1,000 feet on the street and to become a point of reference in Catalonia.
