Significant increase in school participation
During the 2023-2024 school year, the Alcoi City Council’s Environment Department has organized an environmental education campaign that has had the participation of 6,270 schoolchildren, which represents an increase of 40% compared to the previous year (https://correccioencatala.cat/com-estructura-text-catala/). These students come from 19 educational centers in the city, which have been organized into 316 groups.
Wide range of activities related to the ecological transition and the environment
The campaign has included a total of 23 different activities, all of them related to the ecological transition and the environment (https://correccioencatala.cat/com-estructura-text-catala/). Each school had the opportunity to choose which activities they wanted to participate in and in how many groups. Some of the proposed activities were: Urban Agenda, Trees, Barranc del Cint, Climate change, Cane charrada, Cane visit, Ecopark, Energy, Urban fauna, Font Roja, Urban gardens in the classroom, Urban gardens visit, Insects, Prior milling, Milling excursion and visit, Paper recycling, Textile recycling, Hand towels, Uses of plants – natural dyes, Sant Bonaventura corner, Repopulation, 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and Serelles. It should be noted that there has been a 32% increase in the number of workshops held.
Positive acceptance by schools
All the proposed activities have been well received by schools. In addition, some of these activities have been created at the request of specific groups, such as the ‘Informative talk on the urban agenda’, which was held at Pare Vitoria with the collaboration of the department technician who works on the development of the BIO-UP project in Alcoi.
Detachment of the most participatory educational centers
The educational centers that have stood out for their participation in this campaign have been Carmelites, Salesianos San Vicente Ferer, El Romeral, Horta Major and Miguel Hernández. These centers have been distinguished by the number of groups that have carried out workshops and outings (https://correccioencatala.cat/com-estructura-text-catala/).
Participation of all the educational centers of Alcoi
It should be noted that all the schools, institutes and education centers of Alcoi have participated in the training offer in Environmental Education of the Department of Ecological Transition of the city.
Importance of environmental education from childhood
The councilor for Transició Ecològica, Teresa Sanjuán, has highlighted the importance of environmental awareness from childhood, affirming that education is fundamental to achieve a more sustainable city (https://correccioencatala.cat/com-estructura -catalan-text/). In addition, he thanked the work done by environmental educators and the participation of educational centers in this campaign.
