An unexpected appointment
The recent appointment of brother Xabier Gómez as bishop-elect of Sant Feliu de Llobregat has caught the attention of the religious community. In an emotional interview with Ràdio Estel, the friar expressed his surprise at the appointment and expressed his commitment to serve the diocese and the people of God.
Migration: A challenge and an opportunity
Gómez shared his vision on migration, a topic that is becoming more and more relevant in the current context. Instead of seeing migration as a problem, he sees it as an opportunity to enrich society. According to him, the newcomers bring values and vitality to Catholic communities, emphasizing the importance of recognizing their cultural and economic contribution.
The voice of God in difficult times
The bishop-elect emphasized that emigration is a complex phenomenon, but that it represents a way in which God speaks to humanity in our day. He urged the Church to promote a culture of welcome and to combat the rejection and hatred that often surrounds this issue.
A welcoming Church
Fra Xabier has expressed his concern about the increase in hate speech towards immigrants. However, his vision is clear: the Church must be a beacon of hospitality. ‘We must encourage integration and build communities that welcome and support the most vulnerable’, he declared with passion.
Interdiocesan solidarity
The new bishop has mentioned interdiocesan solidarity initiatives, such as hospitality corridors, which seek to improve the situation of migrants. Its intention is to approach the reality of the dioceses of the Canary Islands and take advantage of the diversity of Sant Feliu as a source of enrichment.
A significant year for the diocese
Friar Xabier’s arrival coincides with important celebrations, such as the fifth centenary of the cathedral of Sant Feliu and the 20 years of the bishopric. The bishop-elect has expressed his enthusiasm to be part of these historic moments and has highlighted his relationship with Montserrat, a community he deeply loves.
A valuable baggage
With a background in family guidance and social mediation, Gómez believes she can bring a useful approach to the needs of families in the diocese. ‘The family is the fundamental nucleus of society and of the Church’, he affirmed, emphasizing his intention to serve and accompany families on their journey.
A message of humility
In his presentation, brother Xabier announced that he will dispense with the episcopal coat of arms, opting for a motto that reflects his spirituality: ‘Humility’. This choice symbolizes his aspiration to work with empathy and truth, in line with the teachings of Saint Dominic.
Gratitude and hope
The new bishop expressed his gratitude to Bishop Agustí Cortés for his service for two decades. In addition, he called on the diocesan faithful to let themselves be guided by the Holy Spirit, reminding them of the importance of being witnesses of hope in the present moment. ‘Our mission is to announce Jesus Christ to our neighbours’, he concluded, with a message of solidarity for those who are in difficult times.
