The rejection of the macro farm proposal is growing
Recently, the political formation El Pi-Proposta per les Illes Balears has expressed its concern about the planned installation of a macro chicken farm in the municipality of Sineu. According to the spokesman Antoni Salas, this infrastructure will not only affect the immediate residents, but the repercussions will be felt in a wider area.
Environmental and social impact
Salas has highlighted that the consequences of this farm could be devastating, with bad smells and noises that could reach other towns such as Lloret, Costitx or Santa Margalida. At a recent rally, he stated: “The impact of this infrastructure will be felt throughout the Plan, harming the quality of life of the residents.”
Concern about drought and water consumption
Another point that Salas has highlighted is the colossal water consumption that the farm would require. With estimates that speak of an annual consumption of 61,000 tons of water, Salas has compared this amount with the total consumption of Maria de la Salut. “In addition, there is a risk of contamination of local aquifers,” he added.
Previous experiences and warnings
Salas also mentioned the constant complaints that have arisen in Llucmajor, where the promoters already operate a farm with 150,000 hens. “Imagine the scenario with a facility five times larger. It doesn’t make any sense,” he said, insisting on the need to stop this project before it’s too late.
A sustainable alternative
El Pi has made it clear that its support for local agriculture is firm, but not at the expense of public health or the ecosystem. “We need local products, but not through this model of farms that harms our land,” said Salas.
Actions to stop the macro project
In order to prevent the construction of the macrofarm, El Pi has announced its intention to present motions to all the affected councils. Salas has offered the collaboration of the El Pi batlias with the Sineu City Council to develop actions and campaigns that could stop this project, which they consider harmful to the health of the residents and the environment.
