The Central Government Expresses Discontent

The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, has shown his rejection of the proposal to modify the use of the runways of the Barcelona-El Prat airport for an extension during the summer, stating that this measure will “violate a previous agreement ‘ and does not provide a satisfactory solution.

According to Puente, this proposal will not only increase air traffic without improving the operation of the airport, but will also have a negative impact on the quality of life of the residents of areas such as Castelldefels and Gavà, harming their health due to the possible increase in noise.

The Proposal to Modify the Use of the Tracks

The proposal put forward by ERC consists in altering the use of the runways only during the months of July and August, in a limited way in terms of schedule, with the aim of managing a greater volume of flights during the summer season, as reported by La vanguard

However, Puente believes that this measure will not improve the airport’s efficiency or respect the expansion’s key objectives, which include protecting the health of local residents and promoting international connections.

Reviews and Ratings

The Minister of Transport has urged a more thorough analysis of the proposal, pointing out that the combination of measures, such as the enhancement of more distant airports such as Reus, does not fit the global objective of expanding the infrastructure airport

In addition, other political figures, such as the Minister of Industry Jordi Hereu, have also criticized the proposal, describing it as not very serious and regretting the lack of strategic decision on the part of the Catalan government in the development of regional infrastructure .
