A Unique Experience in Andorra
The Catalonia Sacra project presents Urgelia Sacra, a fascinating initiative that reaches the bishopric of Urgell and premieres in Andorra on Saturday, April 20.
The architect Antoni Pol heads this cultural trip, offering the first activity in the Principality: a special guided visit to the sanctuary of Meritxell.
A Walk through the Cultural Heritage
Catalonia Sacra, a project that unites the ten dioceses of Catalonia, seeks to highlight the region’s rich cultural and religious heritage.
This initiative offers a weekly agenda full of activities, from visits and itineraries to conferences, all to explore churches, sanctuaries, hermitages and intangible heritage.
Discover the Sanctuary of Meritxell
The visit to the sanctuary of Meritxell, with the unique architecture of its time, will start at 11.00 and costs eight euros. Registration is mandatory and is done online.
The origin of the Meritxell church dates back to 1176, although it was completely restructured in the 17th century and subsequently rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1972.
The new sanctuary, an eclectic work by the architect Ricard Bofill, aims to integrate harmoniously with the landscape, incorporating symbolic elements that reflect the name of Meritxell.
Our Lady of Meritxell
During the fire of 1972, the Romanesque carving of the Virgin of Meritxell was lost, which was later reproduced and is now in the new sanctuary.
Architect Antoni Pol
Antoni Pol, an architect trained at the Barcelona School of Architecture, is responsible for guiding this extraordinary experience. With an extensive professional career, he has advised institutions in Andorra and has been a key player in the preservation of the architectural heritage of the region.
