Elections in Catalonia: Jéssica Albiach warns that they are not a plebiscite on Puigdemont or Pedro Sánchez

The Commons Sumar candidate for president of the Generalitat, Jéssica Albiach, has emphasized that the May 12 elections are not a plebiscite on whether Puigdemont returns or not or on Pedro Sánchez.

Elections without plebiscite

In a press conference, Albiach stated that the elections are not a matter of returning Puigdemont or not, nor of deciding on Pedro Sánchez. He stressed that there are many people from different parties who have suffered ‘lawfare’, such as the accusations against the wife of the president of the Spanish government. Albiach recalled that behind every politician there is a person and considered the accusations of tactics against Sánchez offensive.

Interpellation in Salvador Illa

The leader of the commons has also asked the first secretary of the PSC, Salvador Illa, to clarify whether he would reach an agreement with Junts. However, Albiach did not want to comment on whether the Hard Rock recreational project in Tarragona would be a red line to agree a Government with the Socialists. He has stated that only 16% of the population supports this project.

The Hard Rock complex and the electoral advance

The Hard Rock complex was the trigger for the electoral advance, since the PSC conditioned its support for the budgets of the Generalitat on the processing of the project. The commons, along with ERC, opposed this condition, and faced with the impossibility of obtaining the necessary votes to approve the accounts, the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, called early elections.
