A new tax vision
Junts per Catalunya has presented its electoral program, in which it proposes a review of the regional taxes paid by Catalans. This review aims to reduce or even eliminate some taxes, following the fiscal model implemented by the communities governed by the PP. Junts’ intention is to alleviate fiscal pressure and promote investment and consumption through fiscal measures that encourage economic activity.
Protection of vulnerable groups
In its 2021 program, Junts per Catalunya committed to protecting the most vulnerable workers and people at risk of exclusion through specific tax modifications for these groups. In addition, it proposed reducing VAT on products commonly consumed by families. However, in its new program, Junts has adopted a more liberal stance, advocating for widespread tax cuts, following the line of the communities governed by the PP.
Lack of concreteness
Although Junts per Catalunya has proposed the review of regional taxes, it has not specified which taxes should be reduced. In the previous legislature, the party proposed the elimination of the Inheritance tax, despite being one of the most progressive and redistributive taxes. It is important to note that only 6% of heirs paid more than 10,000 euros in 2022, and the majority of taxpayers paid amounts less than 10,000 euros.
Differences between parties
Junts per Catalunya’s proposal to reduce taxes establishes a clear division between the political parties running in the May 12 elections. While Junts and the PP advocate tax cuts, left-wing parties such as the PSC, ERC, the Comuns and the CUP defend maintaining current tax rates and even taxing pollution and large fortunes more.
