A significant decision in defense of the language
In a recent session of the Municipal Plenum, the City Council of Muro has made a forceful decision to preserve the Valencian within the educational system. With the support of political formations, Network Muro, Compromís and PSPV-PSOE, a motion has been approved that rejects the consultation promoted by the Ministry of Education on the use of Valencian as a vehicular language in the classrooms.
Concern for linguistic cohesion
The councilors have expressed their concern about a proposal that can commit the linguistic unit of the Valencian territory. This motion emphasizes that the consultation can cause segregation and ignorance of the role that school councils play in the definition of the linguistic projects of each educational center.
The rejection of the school board
The Muro School Board, which has recently stated its opposition to this law, considers that the regulations represent a threat to the preservation of Valencian and a violation of children’s educational rights. The Councilor for Education emphasized the importance of an educational model that integrates Valencian significantly, as several pedagogical studies have shown.
They ask for a review of the regulations
With the approval of this motion, the City Council urges the Generalitat to suspend the consultation. Municipal representatives have shown that this initiative not only harms the normalization of Valencian, but can also erode the quality of multilingual education.
Administrative procedures and poor information
The approved document emphasizes that the consultative process does not offer the necessary guarantees, with a telematic format that does not allow effective participation. In addition, it has been criticized that the consultation has been made without regard to the needs of the moment, such as the damage caused by the DANA to the school facilities and the instability of the school year.
The language as an identity pillar
The text of the motion emphasizes that the language is one of the fundamental characteristics of Valencian identity. Qualifying the current consultation as an attack on the linguistic richness of the Valencian people is a central concern for the consistory, which see in this action an opportunity to defend the linguistic rights of the community.
Experiences of other territories
In addition, it has been stated that similar cases in the Balearic Islands and Galicia have shown that these initiatives can worsen the situation of minority languages. The introduction of these policies without prior consensus tends to create a social division and to undermine educational quality.
