Port Tarragona: one step further towards European connectivity

by PREMIUM.CAT

Works underway for the new railway infrastructure

In the coming weeks, Port Tarragona is preparing for a significant transformation with the implementation of the third railway thread. Adif will begin works to adapt the roads that connect with the port, allowing the circulation of trains with European width. This improvement will include the installation of a third lane on the general tracks that give access to the northern and south areas of the port area.

Minimum impact on logistics operations

The works have been designed to cause the minimum possible disorder in the logistics operations of the port. In the southern part, the interventions will take place over the weekend, while in the northern part, restrictions will only affect the length of the convoys. Port Tarragona has collaborated closely with Adif to ensure that scheduled railway activities continue without disadvantages.

Phases of work and chronogram

Adif has planned work in two stages. The first phase will be focused on the southern part of the port, where the BOELLA intermodal terminal is located. These works will be carried out during the weekend of March 15 and 16, thus avoiding any interruption in the railway circulation.

Second phase: North Connection

The second stage will take place in the northern area, which includes the docks of Castile, Aragon and the chemical station. This phase will last for a week, between March 17 and 29, with the aim of minimizing the damage to railway operations.

Preparing for the ample UIC

The work previously predicted for March is an important step towards the integration of the Port Tarragona into the European width rail network, known as UIC. The port already has 10.3 kilometers of internal UIC width infrastructure, which favorably positions it to start operating services with European width as soon as the third thread is installed.

Promoting competitiveness at European level

With the future implementation of the Mediterranean Corridor, Port Tarragona will be able to make direct shipping trains to any part of the European continent. This improvement will not only increase its connectivity, but will also strengthen its position as a strategic logistics node in Europe, making the most of its geographical location.

As these works progress, Port Tarragona is preparing for a promising future in European rail transport, with the aim of improving the efficiency and competitiveness of their logistics service.
