Revision of the Waste Rate at Headquarters: A Social Dilemma

by PREMIUM.CAT
The Current Context of the Waste Tax

The Seu d’Urgell City Council is facing a delicate situation regarding the increase in the garbage collection rate for next year. This decision, approved in a recent municipal meeting, has generated a climate of discontent among citizens, especially due to the absence of discounts offered to those who recycle properly.

Complaints and Commitments

After a meeting between Mayor Joan Barrera and representatives of a citizens’ campaign that opposes the current collection model, the municipality expressed its intention to reconsider the increase in the rate for 2025. According to him , seeks to adjust receipts to the amount of waste generated, in line with European and state regulations.

Recycling and Financing Data

At the Headquarters, recycling has improved significantly, going from 54% to 65%. However, the increase in the rate has been significant: from 153 euros to 223 euros, with a proposed increase of 13% in the fixed rate and 40% in the variable for 2025. This situation has been seen aggravated by a subsidy of 900,000 euros from the Generalitat aimed at implementing a new technological system.

Technology in the spotlight

The system for opening organic containers using electronic or mobile key fobs has been criticized by citizens for its lack of functionality. Despite this, Barrera defends this initiative, praising Jordi Vilaró, manager of the Mancomunitat d’Escombraries de l’Urgellet, as an expert in recycling.

The Need for an Open Conversation

During the meeting, Barrera could not ensure that the bonuses for adequate recycling, promised more than a year ago, will reach all citizens. In addition, he proposed a tripartite meeting between the Commonwealth, the City Council and the residents to address the current situation, which in some areas of the municipality is worrying.

Final Reflections

The situation in La Seu d’Urgell reflects a wider debate about waste management and the importance of recycling. As the community seeks sustainable solutions, it is essential that local authorities listen to citizens’ concerns and work together to find ways that benefit everyone.
