Supporting entities and personalities

Several entities and personalities from the world of culture in the Balearic Islands support the initiative of the Balearic Cultural Work (OCB) for the introduction of the concept of linguistic and cultural sustainability in the political debate. Among these entities are Acció Cultural de Menorca, the Institute of Eivissencs Studies, the OCB of Formentera, the Catalan PEN, the Association of Writers in the Catalan Language, the Platform for cultural and creative companies of the Balearic Islands (CREA), ARCA, the Booksellers Guild, the Publishers of the Balearic Islands and the Association of Playwrights and Playwrights of the Balearic Islands. In addition, personalities such as Antònia Vicens, Josefina Salord, Antoni Parera Fons, Biel Mesquida, Antoni Vidal Ferrando, Damià Pons, Sebastià Alzamora, Guillem López Casasnovas, Miquel Brunet, Joan Veny, Nicolau Dols, Pere Antoni Pons, Caterina Valriu, Josep Maria Quintana, Antoni Riera Melis and Andreu Terrades also support this initiative.

The demand for participation from the cultural and linguistic sectors

The OCB has proposed a manifesto in which the participation of the cultural and linguistic sectors in the Sustainability Committee is requested. According to the OCB, the demand for participation is justified by the close relationship between sustainability, intercultural social cohesion and linguistic normalization. In addition, the importance of taking into account the mutual implications between tourist activity and cultural reality is highlighted. The OCB considers that without taking into account the harmful effects caused by the economic model on language and culture, we cannot talk about sustainability.

The importance of linguistic and cultural sustainability

The OCB emphasizes that linguistic and cultural sustainability involves preserving and maintaining the diversity of languages and cultures in the global context. This ensures that each language and culture can fulfill all social functions in its own historical space. Without linguistic and cultural sustainability, there is no equality or freedom for people or for linguistic and cultural communities.

OCB Claims

The OCB demands that the Government take into account the arguments presented and incorporate qualified representatives of the cultural and linguistic sectors in the Sustainability Committee. In addition, it asks that linguistic and cultural sustainability be one of the objectives of sustainability and that the necessary measures be taken to guarantee the fullness and future continuity of the language and culture of the Balearic Islands.
