Tokyo Sushi’s farewell
The renowned Tokyo Sushi restaurant, located on 20 Condal Street, in the picturesque Gothic neighborhood of Barcelona, is saying goodbye permanently due to the imminent demolition of the building that houses its facilities. This establishment, founded in 1978 by Minoru Nishiyama, a pioneer in the introduction of Japanese gastronomy in the city, will have its last service on June 10.
A culinary milestone that comes to an end
Tokyo Sushi, which marked the beginning of a new gastronomic era in Barcelona, says goodbye after almost half a century of influence. Despite the proliferation of Japanese restaurants in the city today, it was this iconic establishment that started the trend that continues to rise today. From simple all-you-can-eat buffets to exclusive Michelin-starred restaurants, the Japanese gastronomic offer in Barcelona has flourished, in part, thanks to the legacy of Tokyo Sushi.
A closure that adds to a worrying trend
The closure of Tokyo Sushi joins a series of closures that have impacted Barcelona in recent months. Emblematic establishments such as the La Gamba bar, the Versalles bar, the Kessler Galimany pastry shop, and the Sants Es Crema restaurant, among others, have had to close their doors. This phenomenon, which is not limited to simple closures, but affects centuries-old and emblematic premises, responds to various causes, from the loss of enthusiasm for the projects to retirement, including the excessive increase in rents.
