The Obra Cultural Balearic (OCB) expresses its rejection of the linguistic segregation plan
The Obra Cultural Balearic (OCB) has sent a letter to all public and private schools in Mallorca expressing its rejection of the pilot plan for linguistic segregation in classrooms. The OCB argues that the plan has not been agreed with any educational agent and that its implementation could be counterproductive for the students’ acquisition of language skills. In addition, the OCB has announced that it will present an administrative appeal to request the precautionary suspension of the plan.
Confidence in the cloisters and management teams
Antoni Llabrés, president of the OCB, has expressed his confidence in the cloisters, the management teams and the ownership of the educational centers to assess the acquisition of the students’ language skills and decide whether it is necessary to maintain or modify the linguistic projects of the center Llabrés has urged the management teams and holders not to consider joining the pilot plan, as he considers it to be unnecessary and may negatively affect the goal of training competent students in Catalan and Spanish.
The arguments of the OCB
The letter sent by the OCB to the educational centers highlights that the linguistic segregation plan is inconsistent, illegal, inequitable, segregating, ineffective, an attempt against the autonomy of the educational centers, arbitrary, conflicting, legally insecure and unbalanced between the sector public and private-concerted. The OCB also refers to a study that indicates a gap of up to 20 points between the mastery of Catalan and Spanish in sixth grade students, and argues that it is necessary to strengthen Catalan in education, not Spanish.
